Careers Week Inspires Students Across Stockport Academy

Careers Week brought a buzz of excitement to Stockport Academy as students explored new ideas about their futures.

Students took part in a range of activities that encouraged them to think about future pathways and the many opportunities ahead. Our atrium became a welcoming hub filled with information stands, student presentations and displays. Each activity throughout the week showed students that there are lots of different routes they can choose when they move on from the Academy.

Throughout the week, students learned about apprenticeships, further education and many types of jobs. Guest speakers visited us to talk about their own careers and the steps they took to reach them. Their real life stories helped students understand what certain jobs involve and how people make important choices about their futures. Staff supported this by discussing these opportunities during tutor time and encouraging students to get involved.

A popular activity involved student leaders role playing the careers they hope to follow. This helped others think about their own goals and what they might enjoy doing in the future. It also reminded students that everyone has their own unique path and that exploring ideas is an important part of planning ahead.

Students also enjoyed meeting former professional footballer Liam Dickinson. He spoke about his journey through football, starting in non league before playing for Stockport County. As well as running a practical session for students, he brought special items from his playing days, including a match worn shirt, medal and boots. Liam now runs a successful plumbing and heating business, and he explained how careers can change over time and why learning new skills is important.

Reflecting on the week, Careers Lead Mr Sherwood said: Careers Week helps our students see what is possible for them as we strive to create opportunity to succeed. They have been brave, asked good questions and shown real ambition. It has been fantastic to watch them explore new ideas and think about their future goals.”
