Course details

Our aim is to provide an excellent maths education for all our students; an education which brings out the best in all of them and prepares them for success in life. 

Our maths curriculum is designed with the promotion of mathematical fluency at its core. The sequence of the curriculum has been deliberately designed to allow our high prior attaining and our low prior attaining pupils to successfully progress through the content.

Cognitive research suggests that students need a large amount of subject knowledge in their long-term memory to become competent at any subject. In maths, students will be far better equipped to apply mathematical thinking to a problem if their working memory isn’t overloaded with basic calculations. Therefore, our curriculum always emphasises secure content knowledge before moving onto problem solving tasks – we expect students to show mathematical expertise when they have acquired fluency with numbers.

Furthermore we are committed to continually developing our teaching and learning  and promoting a culture of independent learning.

How You Can Support Your Child

Provide them with the equipment they will need – a pencil case complete with black/blue pens, a pencil, ruler, eraser, pencil sharpener and red pen. They will also need a scientific calculator. The one we recommend is a Casio FX83GT CW. You can purchase one via ParentPay for £9.50 and students can then collect it in school from room 207.

They will also need to use a computer with reliable internet access for online homework and research, or make use of the clubs in the LRC during break, lunch or after school.

Ensure that, when homework is set, they complete it by the deadline given.

Online Resources

Stockport Academy subscribe to a number of high quality online maths resources. These should be used regularly at home to support completion of homework, ongoing revision and specific topic focus.

Sparx Maths

This online resource, which tailors questions to the students' abilities encourages them to work independently. Regular independent study is set for all students in Years 7-10 via this platform. 

Corbett Maths

This free website has a wealth of resources that support students studying GCSE maths. It has videos and worksheets for every topic as well as practice examination papers, and ‘5 a day’ questions.
