House System

The House System At Stockport Academy

At Stockport Academy, our House System is a central part of daily school life and plays a powerful role in helping students feel a strong sense of belonging, pride and purpose. Designed to bring pupils together across year groups, our House System supports not only academic success, but also character development, teamwork and community spirit.

For families choosing a secondary school, our House System ensures that every child is known, valued and encouraged to get involved from their very first day with us.

A Strong Sense Of Belonging

Every student at Stockport Academy is placed into one of four Houses, named after some of the world’s most inspiring mountain peaks in Nepal:

  • Makalu
  • Lhotse
  • Sagarmatha
  • Annapurna

These aspirational names reflect the values we want our pupils to develop: resilience, ambition, teamwork and perseverance. Students remain in their House throughout their time at the Academy, building long‑lasting friendships across year groups and forming a strong identity within the school community.

Building Character Through Healthy Competition

Our House System creates a positive culture of healthy competition and collaboration. Students earn House Points throughout the year by:

  • Demonstrating excellent behaviour and attitudes to learning
  • Producing high‑quality classwork
  • Taking part in House competitions and enrichment activities
  • Contributing positively to school life and the wider community

House Points are celebrated regularly, helping pupils understand that effort, kindness and commitment matter just as much as academic results. This approach reinforces our core values of Aspiration, Respect and Community.

Events, Activities And Co-Curricular Opportunities

The House System brings learning to life beyond the classroom. Across the year, students take part in a wide range of activities, including:

  • Inter‑house competitions and challenges
  • Fun Day Fridays
  • Charity fundraising and community events
  • Creative, sporting and academic House challenges

What makes our House System unique is its integration across the curriculum. Subject areas contribute through themed competitions and enrichment activities — from maths challenges and science experiments to creative arts showcases and humanities quizzes. This allows students to shine in different ways while developing confidence, creativity and teamwork.

Developing Leadership And Responsibility

The House System offers meaningful leadership opportunities for pupils of all ages. Older students act as role models, while younger pupils are encouraged to contribute, take responsibility and get involved.

Students learn to:

  • Work collaboratively with peers of different ages
  • Represent their House with pride
  • Develop leadership, communication and organisational skills
  • Take ownership of their behaviour and choices

These experiences directly support our wider character education programme, helping pupils grow into confident, respectful and community‑minded young people.

Staff Support And Pastoral Care

Each House is led by a dedicated Head of House, supported by staff who know their students well and champion their success. Our Master of Ceremonies oversees the House programme, ensuring events are inclusive, motivating and enjoyable for all pupils.

For parents, this means:

  • Clear pastoral support structures
  • Strong relationships between staff and students
  • A school culture where every child feels noticed and supported

The House System helps staff and students connect beyond the classroom, strengthening relationships and reinforcing a positive, inclusive school ethos.

Why Parents Value Our House System

Parents consistently tell us that our House System helps their children:

  • Settle quickly into secondary school
  • Make friends across different year groups
  • Build confidence and self‑belief
  • Feel proud to be part of the Stockport Academy community

By combining reward, responsibility and enrichment, our House System ensures that every student has the opportunity to succeed — academically, socially and personally.

A Community Where Every Child Can Thrive

At Stockport Academy, our House System is more than just competition — it is about connection, character and opportunity. It helps create a school environment where students support one another, celebrate success together and grow into the very best versions of themselves.

Together, we are building a House culture that is fun, aspirational and empowering — where every child belongs and every achievement counts.
