After achieving ‘Bronze: Rights Committed’ in November 2021, we have continued to demonstrate that we are committed to learning about, and fighting for, children’s rights in our school, deepening our knowledge of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Our Rights Respecting Schools Panel, which is made up of Year 10 Activism Club, dedicated students from Year 8 and Year 9, and staff from different areas of the school, has been intrinsic in meeting the requirements for the award. During a virtual visit with UNICEF, students showed excellent knowledge of their rights and of the difficulties that people experience in our community and the wider world.
The report explains “the deepening knowledge and understanding of children’s rights across the school is contributing to an increasingly strong sense of empowerment among the young people which many confident to advocate not just for their own rights but for the rights of others too”.
As we continue our journey towards Gold, we will be exploring a different right during each Half Term. Students will find out more about this in assemblies and during form tasks this term.
